The first silly patent is "Anti-eating face mask"
Abstract: An anti-eating face mask which includes a cup-shaped member conforming to the shape of the mouth and chin area of the user, together with a hoop member and straps detachably engageable with a user's head for mounting the cup-shaped member in overlying relationship with the user's mouth and chin area under the nose thereby preventing the ingestion of food by the user.
The main idea behind this invention was to combat obesity by forcibly stopping all wearers from the mask of eating any food. I think this really is trying to solve the problem of obesity in the world. If we take a look at the facts about this problem in the country, you can see how this invention was created:
When we take a hard look at the amount of US population obese, I can relate to why this patent was created.
We can see from Figure 3 that there is HUGE market for devices related to obesity-prevention and reduction. If this patent could capture a share of this market, these patent inventors could be VERY rich.
However, what I find is hilarious is that in the diagrams, it seems like Hannibal Lecter's mask from the movie "Silence of the Lambs."

Hi Payal,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! First, I found it to be very entertaining how you compared this product to "Silence of the Lambs". I agree that this does resemble that. Additionally, I think this is also very "silly" since it does not seem like the most effective way to stop obesity since it essentially just is covering someones mouth rather than changing their life style. Again, another great post! Good job!
Great post Payal! I think this is definitely a very silly patent. Like Gabrielle said, the comparison you made with "Silence of Lambs" was entertaining. In terms of some improvements, it would be good if you could dive into an explanation of the claims of the patent and explain how this silly invention could have been passed as an invention.
ReplyDeleteHi Payal! Good post! This patent actually seems really scary! I hope no one actually used this. I agree with Gabrielle and am glad you compared it to "Silence of the Lambs". It was really interesting hearing your point of view. Next time discuss more about the claims and how it is non-obvious/novel. Overall, good work! :)
ReplyDeletePayal,
ReplyDeleteThe anti-eating face mask is indeed a very silly patent. However, I do believe it holds great value due to its applications with obese people. For those people who cannot control their eating habits, this patented invention seems to be a great physical, inhibitor. Who knows what other applications it could have to act like a muzzle for pets as well! Anyways, great job and looking forward to checking in next week!
Best,
Anish
