I have taken quite a few online classes where social media learning was a part of the curriculum, but I feel that was necessary because we never had actual meetings and physical interactions with our peers in the course.
When we take a look at the facts regarding Generation Y and social media, it seems surprising why the education system has not embraced this medium more heavily yet.
Generation Y seems to be more active in the social networks when compared to older age groups. We can observe it at Facebook – the most popular social network. The younger generation is changing the way they take advantage of the social media tools. Facebook is for mostly Millenials, which practically means a social network is turning into a multi-tool service – instead of following news services, Generation Y is following fanpages and communicating via social networks in place of sending e –mails In case of dissatisfaction, they prefer to make a complaint on a company fanpage rather than send a regular complaint form to the producer.
There's numerous ways to include social media in education:
- Blogging
- Podcasts
- Facebook posts
- Video sharing
- Collaborative presentation
This video below shows a great idea for how social media can be supported by psychology:

ReplyDeleteHi Payal, you really went that one step further with this blog post – well done! I agree that this way of learning was ‘refreshing’ since it was so unique and more engaging compared to any other class I have taken. Great use of the term “Generation Y” by the way! Your diagram presenting the statistics on this is great and I can really relate to it. Embedding the Big Thinkers Series video on learning in social media spaces by Mimi Ito was a great idea. I actually watched this YouTube video before producing my blog and video on this assignment. Furthermore, it was great how you provided a list of 6 ways to encompass social media in education. However, it would have been great if you expanded on each point and tied this back to our IEOR 190G course. This would have allowed you to specifically answer Tal’s questions more effectively. Overall, I felt that the post was a bit too general and not specific to the class. For example, after focusing on generation Y and the general education system, you could have focused more on the students in our classroom. Besides this, your post was great and really well organized! You articulated your main arguments exceptionally well. Congratulations on a job well done!
ReplyDeleteHi Payal,
ReplyDeleteThis is honestly an excellent blog post. I loved how you included a graphic with the statistics you found on the topic! I think social media is one of the defining characteristics of the 21st century and our generation. It is one of the was we communicate the most, sometimes even more than text or telephones. I think it was very thoughtful of you to include different ways to integrate social media into education. In this class, we have used many of these methods and that is why I think we learned the material so thoroughly and comprehensively! Great post!
Hey!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very well written post! I was not aware that even many online courses participated in social media learning techniques. I would love to know how you felt about social media being used in that way and if it was more or less helpful than in our class. I appreciated how you incorporated how social media is heavily used in our everyday lives. Knowing this, I agree with you that we can take great advantage of this by spreading knowledge and educating ourselves rather than just following fanpages and complaining. Also, the video you posted was very interesting and informative. Nice blog!
HI Payal! This is a great post, and I am in absolute love with the pictures that you posted up here. They are very good representation and accurately describe what you say on your post! I especially like how you mention that we are all a member of Generation Y, and that we are the ones who have grown and watched social media become an integral part of our social lives. This is also very interesting for me, how this class has basically taken that up a notch and applied to this on an educational arena. Really want to see if other people start doing this too!
ReplyDeleteHi Payal,
ReplyDeleteI love the graphics! I like how the chart you found easily demonstrates the facts regarding Generation Y and social media. It is great justification to as why we have not seen social media more incorporated into the education system.
I like how you talk a lot about the pros of social media in class, but what are the cons? I always like hearing about both sides of an argument!
Hola Payal! I loved the graphics as well! The facts strike me a lot, social media has so quickly become of a part of our lives. It is good that professor Tal is using it in a really positive way :-)
ReplyDeletePayal,
ReplyDeleteThe graphics were truly a great addition to your post as a whole! It is crucial to note that the millennial generation is already more prone to using social media platforms, and that this style of education is better suited to their interests, preferences, and needs. Your final list of ways to incorporate social media into courses is great to consider. I think that we could also use Piazza as a platform. Great and well organized post, Payal!
